Addressing more than 6,300 soldiers, Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief Snr-Gen Min Aung Hlaing said that the military will continue to play a political role as the country transforms itself into a democracy. The military must strengthen its capabilities and regional alliances to build a "well-disciplined democratic nation."

Myanmar’s Commander-in-Chief spoke of the importance of maintaining national unity and sovereignty, and said his troops will abide by international humanitarian law.

In addition, he called for modern weaponry and training, and closer alliances with neighboring countries, particularly member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
